2020 Youth Concerto Competition – Submission Deadline

It’s back, in all its glory! We’ve had to make a few tweaks, but the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra WILL host its annual Youth Concerto Competition this season.

2020 VIRTUAL YOUTH CONCERTO COMPETITION

 Rules of Participation

 

  1. Entrants must submit a video recording and a copy of the solo part via the online application by 11:59 PM EDT on Monday, June 15, 2020. You will be asked to share a link (Google Drive, Dropbox, YouTube) to your materials.

 

  1. *The video recording must be a raw, unedited recording of a single take (splicing is prohibited) using non-professional grade equipment. Cell phone quality expected.

 

  1. *Entrants must be under 20 years old as of June 15, 2020, including up to recent (2020) graduates from high school.

 

  1. Entrants must be residents of Monroe, Brown, Greene, Lawrence, Morgan, or Owen counties in Indiana.

 

  1. Entrants must perform without accompaniment.

 

  1. Entrants should perform a piece of music that has an orchestral accompaniment, not to exceed 15 minutes in length. Repertoire will be approved by the Bloomington Symphony with consideration to availability of music and its feasibility in provided rehearsal time. Entrants will be notified well in advance if there are any concerns with repertoire.

 

  1. *Solo pianists must perform on an upright, baby grand, or grand piano; keyboards are not allowed.

 

  1. Music does not need to be memorized for the competition, but the winner must have the music memorized to perform with the orchestra.

 

 Previous Youth Concerto Competition first place winners are not eligible to compete.

 

  1. We hope to be able to invite the winner(s) to perform alongside the orchestra during our 2020-2021 season.

 

  1. The Youth Concerto Competition Winner will receive a $250 cash prize. The Runner-up will receive a $150 cash prize. The judges reserve the right not to award a first place, in which case a second prize of $150 may be awarded.

 

  1. The results of the competition will be announced by June 22nd. All entrants will receive a phone call from the BSO artistic director after a decision is confirmed, and all entrants will receive notes from the judges. All decisions by the judges are final.

 

 

*Please email us at bso.outreach@gmail.com if you have any questions or lack the resources (computer, scanner, internet, recording device, piano, etc.) to participate in the competition. We will make every effort possible to assist you in accessing the necessary equipment.
