2024 Youth Concerto Competition Winners

Congratulations to the 2024 BSO Youth Concerto Competition winner Catelijne Hunt, violin, and runners-up Sinead Whelan, viola, and Solar Manley, piano! We look forward to next season when when Catelijne will play Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens with the BSO in March 2025.


1st place: Catelijne Hunt, violin, will play Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso by Saint-Saens with the BSO in March 2025. 

Bloomington native Catelijne Hunt, currently a homeschooled high school freshman, studies violin with Dr. Brenda Brenner at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Pre-college String Academy. Additionally, she has taken lessons with Sarah Kapustin and Mimi Zweig, and participated in masterclasses with Noah Bendix-Balgley, Vadim Gluzman, Luke Hsu, Sirena Huang, Kyung Sun Lee, Robin Scott, and Almita Vamos. Catelijne won first prize in the 2023 Northern Kentucky University School of the Arts Tri-State Rising Artists Violin Competition. She performs as a member of the Jacobs School of Music String Academy Virtuosi and also enjoys playing chamber music.


2nd place: Sinead Whelan, viola
Violist Sinead Whelan (she/her) is a student of Mimi Zweig at the IU Pre-College String Academy. She began music at the age of 4, starting on the violin but switching to the viola at the age of 12. For four years, Sinead has performed as a part of the IU Virtuosi, a renowned and well-traveled ensemble of young violinists and violists. In 2021, Sinead performed the Telemann Viola Concerto with the Bloomington Symphony Orchestra as an honorable mention for their Youth Concerto Competition. She recently received an honorable mention from the Orchestra Indiana Youth Concerto Competition and an honorable mention at the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Maurer Youth Concerto Competition. In addition to Zweig, Sinead has studied viola with Esteban Hernandez Parra, Roeland Jagers, and Atar Arad at the Jacobs School of Music. Sinead is a senior at Bloomington High School North and will be pursuing a B.M. in Viola Performance at the Jacobs School of Music. Outside of music she is heavily involved in the community, especially in regards to diversity, equity, and inclusion at her school.


3rd place: Solar Manley, piano
Solar Manley is a student of Fred Hammond via the Indiana University Young Pianists program. A sophomore at Bloomington High School North, Solar participates in band, choir, jazz band and marching band.
